News & Seminars Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Approved for Ph.D. DegreeThe Board of Trustees of The University of Tulsa have approved a proposal by the Department for a Ph.D. graduate program in Chemistry. In March 2008 the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation will make the final review of the proposal. It is anticipated that our new Ph.D. program will start in the Fall of 2008. 2007 Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Program Has a Successful SessionThere were 21 undergraduate students involved this summer in Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Program, CSURP, 2007. This is the largest in the 13-year history of the program. This year, in addition to faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Allan Harkness, from the Department of Psychology and Dr. Parameswar Hari from the Department of Physics participated in the program. In all, there were nine faculty mentors directing student research this summer. Dr. Purser is the director of this program. Iota Sigma Pi, National Honor Society for Women in Chemistry, has Their Late Fall InitiationOn October 28th , 2007 the Einsteinium Chapter of Iota Sigma Pi, National Honor Society for Women in Chemistry, initiated 7 students and 2 professional chemists into their honor society. Qualified students and faculty from area colleges and laboratories are eligible to join the Einsteinium Chapter housed at The University of Tulsa. Faculty Members and Students Appear on the History Channel’s Modern Marvels TV ProgramThe History Channel’s Modern Marvels show will feature two TU professors and two students at 11 a.m. and again at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11. Chemistry professors Dale Teeters and Robert Howard were filmed in Keplinger Hall in June for an episode dedicated to batteries, which debuted earlier this fall. For the episode, Teeters, who is also chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, explained his research in nanobatteries, for which he recently received a $650,000 grant from the Department of Defense and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. The film crew also shot footage of Howard as he demonstrated how to make a battery using lemons and of two students, Lauren Hutter Conway (BS '07) and senior biochemistry major Mira Georgy.
